Enhancing Flood Hazard Assessments in Coastal Louisiana Through Coupled Hydrologic and Surge Processes

چکیده
Traditional coastal flood hazard studies do not typically account for rainfall-runoff processes in quantifying and related cascading risks. This study addresses the potential impacts of antecedent rainfall-runoff, tropical cyclone (TC)-driven rainfall, TC-driven surge on total water levels its influence delineating a transition zone two distinct basins southeastern Louisiana (Barataria Lake Maurepas watersheds). Rainfall-runoff from rainfall along with storm was simulated using new rain-on-mesh module incorporated into ADCIRC code. Antecedent conditions were obtained 21 landfalling TC events spanning 1948–2008 via rain stations. A parametric, TC-driven, model used precipitation associated TC. Twelve synthetic storms varying meteorological intensity (low, medium, high) utilized each watershed provided forcing inundation simulations. First, it found that (pre-TC landfall) is influential up to 3 days pre-landfall. Second, results show increase peak within basin, dominating across basin's upper portions. Third, delineated zones coastal, transition, hydrologic stark differences between basins.

Elevation Uncertainty in Coastal Inundation Hazard Assessments
Coastal inundation has been identified as an important natural hazard that affects densely populated and built-up areas (Subcommittee on Disaster Reduction, 2008). Inundation, or coastal flooding, can result from various physical processes, including storm surges, tsunamis, intense precipitation events, and extreme high tides. Such events cause quickly rising water levels. When rapidly rising w...

Flooding is one of the most occurring natural hazards every year risking the lives and properties of the affected communities, especially in Philippine context. To visualize the extent and mitigate the impacts of flood hazard in Malingon River in Valencia City, Bukidnon, this paper presents the combination of Geographic Information System, high-resolution Digital Elevation Model, land cover, so...
متن کاملVulnerability of Coastal Communities from Storm Surge and Flood Disasters
Disasters in the form of coastal storms and hurricanes can be very destructive. Preparing for anticipated effects of such disasters can help reduce the public health and economic burden. Identifying vulnerable population groups can help prioritize resources for the most needed communities. This paper presents a quantitative framework for vulnerability measurement that incorporates both socioeco...
متن کاملCoupled wave and surge modelling and implications for coastal flooding
The physical causes of coastal flooding due to marine storms are discussed. We examine the costs and impacts of storm surges and waves with reference to the UK. The mechanisms of interaction between waves and the mean circulation due to tides and wind are reviewed. A case study to illustrate the magnitude of surges, waves and their interactions is presented for Liverpool Bay in the eastern Iris...
